Food Supply
There was scarcity of food items and essential goods after second world war. British government formed a department in India after World War II in 1940 to manage scarcity and distribution of food and essential commodities. To deal with scarcity and increase in price during war, a post of “Price Controller”and department “price control department” was formed in 1941. Again this department was bifurcated as “Civil Supply”and “Economics and statistical department”in 1942 to maintain civil supplies and control price rise respectively.
In 1943 this department was converted to a full fledged department to look after purchase, Store and distribution of essential commodities through fair price shops. Uttar Pradesh was divided in several administrative sections and Regional Food controller was appointed. Again department was bifurcated as Civil supplies-purchase department and rationing department to ensure distribution of commodities.
